Fraser valley
youth society
needs your help

A not-for-profit society serving the needs of 2SLGBTQIA+ and allied youth across the Fraser Valley providing
weekly drop-ins, support, resources, community events and local advocacy.

Fraser valley
youth society
needs your help

As of November 2023, Fraser Valley Youth Society does not have Canada Revenue Agency charitable status due to an administrative error.

We have rectified the filing error and are currently applying to have our charitable status reinstated; however, it could take up to six months for the CRA to reinstate our status.

This change of status has impacted our donations and eligibility for grants, putting our programs at risk of continuing.

We come to the community with an ask for help in the form of donations, support, and fundraising.

We are fundraising to help resume normal operations. If you are interested in helping plan and host a fundraiser please connect with us at info@fvys.ca so we can support. Other ways we are looking for support include pre-packaged snacks or grocery cards to help provide healthy foods in our groups. As well as sharing our story and need for regular and consistent funding to keep our programs running.  Thank you for your support!

Receiving Donations

The CRA has confirmed that we are able to receive donations but cannot issue tax receipts without charitable status. We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause and hope you will consider continuing your support of Fraser Valley Youth Society as we remediate the situation.

We will maintain communication with our community and donors by providing an update as soon as our charitable status is reinstated.

Impact to Services

The majority of our services will need to be paused beginning the week of February 5th

We will be providing one weekly drop-in on a volunteer basis in the meantime and will confirm as soon as our other groups are able to resume. Our current weekly drop in will be held on Tuesdays 6-9pm at the Mission Youth Activity Centre.

We will do our best to respond to inquires, asks for support, resources, and other community needs in the meantime and to the best of our ability as we respond to these changes. Please note that we hope to resume our drop-ins and normal functioning as soon as possible as supporting 2SLGBTQ+ and allied youth we serve is our top priority.

Through limited staffing, overwhelming volunteer support, and our volunteer board of directors we have held weekly drop-ins for youth in Abbotsford, Mission, and Chilliwack as our main service, as well as providing resources, support for youth and families, local advocacy, resources, and workshops aimed at supporting and bettering our community for 2SLGBTQ+ youth.

We have hosted Fraser Valley Pride in the community for 11 years to bring a celebration of 2SLGBTQ+ identity, inclusion, and diversity to our communities and fundraise for FVYS.

IMPORTANCE OF

DROP-IN SERVICES

Drop-ins among other services are important way to give a safe and supportive space for 2SLGBTQ+ and allied youth in our community.

2SLGBTQ+ youth face challenges and barriers to their wellbeing, such as but not limited to, harassment, discrimination, social exclusion, violence, etc. which can adversely impact factors such as mental health, substance use, and safety from forms of violence.

Having even one safe adult in a 2SLGBTQ+ youths’ life has been shown to have a significant positive impact on outcomes for health and provide a protective barrier in the high rates of suicide we see for this population. Drop-ins are a safe space for youth to socialize, participate in activities, learn about community supports, under supervision from trained and caring staff and volunteers. As we see increased threats of violence and hostile social conditions for 2SLGBTQ+ folks in the Fraser Valley at present, these types of spaces and supports are especially important.
